Vacation Gone Wrong

Author's Note: I haven't written much fiction lately so that's what I'm going to be writing in this piece.  I wanted to work on my advanced introduction.

"Crunch!" Glass is flying all over the cabin of the plane digging straight into my skin, I feel like I'm being hit by a train as we make impact with the solid ground. My head is spinning and I start feeling woozy then all I see is black as my head hits the side of my seat, Unconscious. This was only supposed to be vacation a way to get away from the city and enjoy some much needed time in the woods, but it turned out to be much more than that.

Last spring break and my parents and I were going to a lodge in Canada for my seventeenth birthday not the traditional spring break vacation but It would still be fun. Just 10 minutes left in school and then I get to leave for the airport, my parents left for the lodge already so I was on my own. RING! there was the bell I walked out of school and to my car and drove to the airport. I was the only one getting into the small Cessna 172 plane just me and the pilot, the lodge wasn't very far but it would've been hard to drive and the lodge had a small airstrip so the visitors could get there easily like me. I have all of my hunting gear also a fishing pole and all of the other necessary supplies I need for this trip. This was going to be awesome.

Twenty minutes later we were in the air flying over the tree tops and into the great wilderness. About an hour past and I remember we were flying over a lake enjoying the view when the whole cabin began blinking red, the Cessna was out of fuel. There must have been a leek because I saw the pilot fill it before we left. Now we begin to stall and descend toward the lakes brown, grassy, rock solid shore and I prepare for the worst. Then  the plane made impact.

When I regained my conscious it was early morning so that meant I was out for about 10 hours. I looked around and my equipment seemed alright but it was going to be hard to get out of this pile of bent metal and scraps. I took a look in the cockpit and on the first sight of blood I knew that the pilot wasn't as lucky as me.
He had taken most of the impact and I couldn't bring myself to look further into the cockpit. Enough looking around how the heck was I supposed to get out of this death trap. I found that one of the doors was crumpled so I kicked as hard as I could and it broke free letting a rush of cool air in. The air went straight into my open wounds sending pain though my body, then relief.

When I got up, I fell, my ankle on the other leg was definitely broken and I couldn't put pressure on it. I carefully stood up and grabbed the emergency pack from above along with my gear. With my ankle it would be hard  to travel but I had to because the smell of fresh blood would attract bears and wolves, I was surprised they hadn't already come. With that in mind I used a cloth from the emergency pack to wipe most of the blood off and I bandaged the worst wounds. Now to get moving, not much to do but limp which is what i did until I came up to a small river perfect place to set up camp.

Now I had water but I needed food and shelter so I looked over my supplies and found a tarp that would work for shelter also there was a large hollow tree at the corner of the clearing, perfect. For food I had my hunting gear, a .22 from the emergency kit and some peanuts that I decided to eat right there. I could use the .22 for small game I had plenty of ammo and if my ankle gets any better I could hunt larger game with my compound bow and camo clothes.

I walked over to the tree that I was going to make into my shelter and it was the perfect size so I could lay down but wanted to raise my bed like they do in the survival shows so animals don't crawl in with you. That was simple just a few branches jammed into the trunk of the tree so I could put my sleeping bag on top. Then I put the tarp over the entrance to protect myself from the weather. "Nice job Tom," I said to myself and it was, you wouldn't think it but it is actually really comfy.

As I was admiring my work I noticed some movement at the edge of the clearing I picked up the .22 and fired a quick shot, I guess I'm having rabbit for dinner. Now I have to get some wood for a fire, I guess I could limp it out. After about an hour I had a good amount of wood, another rabbit, and a grouse. I started a fire and cooked my food and ate the grouse and saved the rabbits just in case. After that I went to my "room" to get some rest I had a tiring day. After putting the cooked rabbit in my backpack I got into my sleeping bag and I was out right away.

At about two in the morning I woke up to the sound of twigs breaking rapidly and I only had time to grab the .22 before a huge brown bear came bursting into the clearing coming straight at my tree. I dived out of the way at the perfect time before the bear mowed me down, he hit my makeshift bed and all of my stuff went flying. Now what am supposed to do, I was smart enough to grab the little .22 to take on a huge brown bear how stupid. I didn't have much time to decide on what to do before the bear turned around came at me for round two.

Lucky for me the .22 was semi-automatic and had a pretty big clip so I fired five quick shots at the oncoming bear, the first missed, the second hit its eye, and the last three hit its front legs slowing it down drastically. I tried to fire again all I heard was CLICK,CLICK, great now I forgot to fill the clip after hunting yesterday and the bear was still coming so I bashed the butt of the gun on its head breaking the stock. I dropped the gun and limped for my bow. The bear was still kind of dazed but it kept coming at me I picked up my bow loaded an arrow shot and hit the bear square in the chest. It was still alive but it wouldn't be for long I began sprinting/limping the other way and tripped on a root of a tree with my bad ankle I couldn't get up and the bear was closing in. I grabbed an arrow out of my quiver and right when the bear began its deadly leap to finish me off, I jabbed the arrow into its neck and it was all over.

I was tired and I couldn't move I lay there on the ground next to the dead bear and thought about what just happened. What a vacation I wanted to come up here to go hunting not be hunted. Enough thinking my head hurt all I wanted to do was sleep and that's what I did.

When I woke up my body ached all over. I looked around and I heard "About time you wake up," It was my dad and I wasn't in the woods I was in a hospital, but how. They told me I was unconscious when they found me so I didn't notice the huge rescue chopper that came to take me away. Also they said that they where lucky they found me they did otherwise I might have died from blood loss. I didn't care I was alive and safe that was all that mattered.

Hunting Essay

Authors Note: I had this essay from earlier this year, the one that Mr.Johnson asked us to write and now I decided to post it

Hunting

Hunting is a tradition that has been passed down through many, many generations and kept alive by the fact that people need to hunt to survive. Now that is not very true today but hunting is still a huge part of people lives. Even the early humans hunted to live, if they didn’t and just decided to be vegetarians there is no way they could have survived and we most likely wouldn’t be alive. So if you don’t think hunting is important I’m about to change your mind.

You probably think hunting today is very hostile because people shoot animals just for their horns that could be true but definitely not in my family. We do take the horns from the deer we shoot but we use the meat for many different meals it taste better than beef and if you think about it you save a ton on meat. This is because all you have to do is pay about $20 for a license and if you shoot a deer you could have meat for over a year and you would save money on brats, sausage, bacon, steaks and any other foods like that. Of course you could have the meat processed into those things but that is pretty cheap about $150 but again you get enough meat to last over a year. Even if you do that you are still saving money.

Another plus to hunting is it regulates the population of deer and other animals. If there was no hunting the populations would grow rapidly causing loss of vegetation, passing of diseases and more human animal interactions that could turn violent, take wolves for example. Wolves eat deer and with the all the populations growing some of the deer will definitely have disease. If they feast on those deer they will be diseased too, so will the other wolves making them violent and rabid. Along with the growing human and animal population they would end up colliding with the violent wolves and things wouldn’t be pretty.

You probably say that what I said is wrong because you think, “If that is true how could’ve animals survived before humans settled if they are all diseased?” Well the answer is right in the question it was humans. Before the animals had plenty of room to spread out and live freely then when humans came we destroyed a ton of their habitat kind of trapping them in small parts and when they need to spread out they can’t, that’s when bad things happen. Now I’m not saying that we are evil but that is why we need to regulate the animal populations so they can live without being crammed together.

People’s opinions on hunting are very different and I bet almost all of the people that say hunting is bad have never tried it so they shouldn’t be saying anything. I encourage you to at least try hunting if you can, you never know until you try. If you’re not really a gun person and can’t stand the sight of blood it’s probably not for you. Either way I love hunting and there is no way anyone is changing my mind. Now what’s your opinion do you support hunting or not?
